Here’s a weird silver lining: hurricanes actually help the planet. They move heat from the tropics toward the poles. They also stir up the ocean, bringing nutrients to the surface. Without them, the Earth would get even hotter. So, in a way, they are the Earth’s air conditioner. A really, really violent air conditioner.
Plus, they create incredible surf. Big wave surfers chase hurricanes. They fly to remote islands to ride the monster swells. So while your roof is leaking, some guy in Hawaii is having the ride of his life. Perspective, people! Perspective.
Still, it’s smart to know your risk. If you live in the coastal Southeast or Gulf states, you are in the danger zone. That’s basically from Texas all the way to Maine. Yes, even Maine gets the ghost of a hurricane sometimes.
