I blame the soap opera curse. If a character leaves and we never hear from them again, our brains automatically assume they’ve been hit by a lorry off-screen. It’s the Albert Square way.

Also, his last episodes were in 1999. That’s twenty-six years ago. In soap time, that’s basically a geological era. The entire cast has been replaced about four times since then.

But here’s the kicker: Paul Bradley is still acting! He was in Holby City for years. And he went back to EastEnders in 2026—alive and well—for a quick visit to see Dot Cotton. Dot even commented on his scarf.

The Real Question: Should He Die?

Honestly? No. Nigel Bates surviving is a small miracle. In a show where everyone dies in a boat crash or a fire or a parking ticket dispute, his peaceful exit is rebellious.

Think about it: Did you really want to see Nigel get murdered in a whodunit, with suspicious looks from Pat Butcher? I didn’t think so. Some characters are too pure for that.

Let him be the bloke who got out. Let him be the one who escaped the Square’s death trap. He’s probably in Inverness right now, sipping tea and feeding a labrador.
