If you’re a weekday warrior, you’re golden. Monday to Saturday, Amsterdam-style early birds can start shopping around 9:00 AM. But on Sunday? The vibe shifts. Most shops don’t open until 11:00 AM or 12:00 PM and start herding you out by 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM. It’s a government thing, believe it or not. The Sunday Trading Act of 1994 limits large shops to six continuous hours of trade. So, you get a nice lie-in, and the cashiers get time to pray to the god of broken alarm clocks.
Oxford Street opening times Christmas 2017: When are shops open
Here’s a fun fact to impress your friends: Selfridges opens its doors at 9:30 AM. Not 9:00, not 10:00. 9:30. Why? Because they’re fancy. They want you to have a leisurely morning, maybe buy a £10 latte from their rooftop bar first, and then casually browse a £5,000 handbag. It’s a psychological power move. Meanwhile, Primark on the same street opens at 8:00 AM during sale season, because their business model is “early bird gets the polyester.”
The “Late-Night” Myth
You might have heard rumours of “late-night shopping.” Yes, it exists. Many Oxford Street stores stay open until 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM on Thursdays or Fridays. But don’t roll in at 7:59 PM expecting a leisurely browse. They start kicking you out at 7:45 PM. I’ve seen it. A pair of ninja-like staff members will stand at the door and make intense eye contact with you until you buy your socks and leave. It’s less “shopping” and more “a polite hostage negotiation.”
Also, special mention to Christmas Eve when all logic goes out the window. Shops might open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. Or 10:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM. It’s chaos. Just bring a tent and a rucksack of supplies if you’re shopping in December. Honestly, it’s like the shops are saying, “We’ve been nice all year, now we’re going home to eat Quality Street and hate our families.”
