Every now and then, a tourist asks, “Can I drive to Cuba?” Oh, honey, no. That’s like asking if you can drive to the moon. Unless your car is a boat with wheels—and even then, you’ll need a really long extension cord for the GPS. The point is, water is the obstacle, and water doesn’t care about your road trip playlist.
But if you could drive underwater, it would take about 1.5 hours at 60 mph. You’d pass by lots of fish, maybe a sunken treasure, and definitely some annoyed dolphins. It’s a fun daydream, but for now, you’ll have to settle for a boat or a plane.
How Far is Cuba from Miami? - WorldAtlas.com
Anecdote from the Beach
Last summer, I was on a Miami beach with a friend from Ohio. He pointed at the horizon and said, “So, Cuba’s right there?” I nodded seriously. He squinted, then asked, “Can I throw a rock that far?” I told him to try. He didn’t. But for a second, we both believed maybe a really strong arm could do it.
That’s the magic of 90 miles. It’s close enough to feel connected, but far enough to be a whole different world. It makes you appreciate that Miami and Cuba share the same sun, the same ocean, and sometimes the same vibe—just with a big gap of blue in between.
